Frequently asked questions
What encryption does this use?
Industry-standard PDF encryption, recognized and enforced by every major PDF reader (Adobe Acrobat, Preview, browser PDF viewers) — not just a soft restriction that some tools ignore.
Can I remove the password later if I forget it?
No — if the password is lost, the file cannot be recovered by NexaPDF AI or anyone else; store it somewhere safe. If you set it yourself and still have it, use Unlock PDF to remove it.
Does protecting a PDF also prevent printing or copying?
No. This applies the standard permission set, so once someone has the password and can open the document they can print and copy from it normally. The password controls who gets in, not what they may do once inside. If particular content must not travel at all, remove it with Redact PDF before sharing.
Is a password-protected PDF safe to email?
It is far safer than sending it unprotected, provided you send the password through a different channel. Putting the file and its password in the same email undoes the protection entirely, because anyone reading that message has both halves.
Should I password-protect this, or redact it?
It depends who you are worried about. A password keeps the whole document away from people you never sent it to. Redaction removes specific content from inside a document you are deliberately handing over. Sensitive material going to a wide or untrusted audience usually needs both.
