Frequently asked questions

Do I need to know the password?

Yes. Unlock PDF removes protection you can already get past — it decrypts the file with the password you supply and saves an unencrypted copy. It does not crack, guess, or bypass passwords, and no legitimate tool does; PDF encryption is real cryptography, not a toggle.

What if I've lost the password?

Then the content is not recoverable — by this tool or by us. That's the intended behavior of encryption. If you protected the file yourself, check wherever you stored the password; if someone else did, ask them for a copy.

Why does it say my PDF isn't password-protected?

Because it genuinely isn't encrypted, so there's nothing to remove. Rather than hand back an identical file and imply work was done, the tool tells you plainly. You may be thinking of permission restrictions (no printing, no copying), which are a different mechanism.

Is it legal to unlock a PDF?

When it's your own document or you have the owner's permission and password, yes — that's ordinary use. Removing protection from someone else's document without authorization may breach copyright or computer-misuse law where you live. Use it on files you own or are authorized to handle.

Does unlocking change the document itself?

No. Only the encryption is removed — pages, text, images, form fields and signatures come through untouched, and the file stays exactly as editable as it was before it was protected.
